GAS SAFE REGISTER
On 8 September 2008, HSE awarded a 10 year contract to the Capita Group Plc to provide a new registration scheme for gas engineers from 1 April 2009.

The current scheme has been in place for more than 17 years.  During this time the number of domestic gas related fatalities has fallen significantly.

However, a 2006 review of domestic gas safety[1] involving industry stakeholders (including gas engineers and their representatives) and consumer groups identified no room for complacency and a strong case for change.  The HSE have listened to these views in developing a modernised scheme which is set to deliver improvements to gas safety and added value for consumers and gas engineers.

The Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI Registration in Great Britain on April 1st 2009. Gas Safe Register deals with all aspects of the downstream gas industry covered by the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 and the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1994 as amended and applied by the Gas Safety (Application) Order 1996 in the Isle of Man.

It covers both piped natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). It is law that anyone carrying out gas work that is within the scope of the appropriate Regulations is on the Gas Safe Register from 1 April 2009.
